According to the temperature measurement method, temperature instruments can be divided into two categories: contact type and non-contact type.

Generally speaking, the contact temperature measuring instrument is relatively simple, reliable and has high measurement accuracy. However, since the temperature measuring element and the measured medium need to perform sufficient heat exchange, it takes a certain time to reach thermal equilibrium, so there is a delay in temperature measurement. At the same time, it is limited by high temperature resistant materials and cannot be applied to very high temperature measurement.

Non-contact instrument temperature measurement is based on the principle of thermal radiation. The temperature measurement element does not need to contact the measured medium. The temperature measurement range is wide, not limited by the upper limit of the temperature measurement, and it will not destroy the temperature field of the measured object. The response speed is generally relatively fast; however, due to the influence of external factors such as the object's emissivity, measurement distance, smoke and moisture, its measurement error is large.
